GEN Africa Awards 2019

Livelihood Development and Empowerment Through Waste Recycling Into Resources.

Project Background

Eco-Clean Ghana was named the winner of the GEN Africa 2019 awards. An outline of a project proposal was submitted to be executed using the awards funds.

Project Achievements

As a part of this project, we held a week-long training for five youths, teaching sustainable and practical steps to take while transforming plastic waste into products like bags or laptop cases.

We facilitated a community clean-up event to show people proper waste disposal strategies.

We also organized a radio program, which reached over 2000 people in the municipality.

Finally, we coordinated our plastics recycling program.

Training Methodology and Duration

During the youth training, we coached and mentored the participants, who had access to both instructor-led and hands-on learning. They were guided through each step, from waste collection and cleaning to the final stitches to create finished ecobags.

The training lasted seven (7) days, starting at 8AM and ending at 4PM each day.

Training Evaluation

A workshop evaluation was conducted right after the training to find out whether the training objectives were met. Thankfully, they were - the participants learned all the skills we set out to teach. The training could have yielded more positive results if the days were extended and if we had access to more materials. The participants would have benefitted from a little more instruction and practice to help them become master ecobag producers.
